Elevators: Kara-Lis Coverdale

Lapkričio 30 d. Sapiegų rūmuose Kara Lis Coverdale pristatys „A Series of Actions in a Sphere of Forever“ – devynių noktiurnų rinkinį, skirtą fortepijonui. Natūralus fortepijono rezonansas diktuoja kūrinių struktūrą, o pati muzika balansuoja tarp sąmoningumo ir pusiau sapniškos būsenos.

Skirtingai nei Satie, Debussy ar Chopino noktiurnuose, Coverdale kompozicijose naktis ateina dar vėliau – su didesniu jautrumu triukšmui, tylai ir erdvei. Lėta, santūri ir koncentruota muzika čia tyrinėja ne tik garsą, bet ir jo nykimą bei leidžia melodijoms, įkvėptoms vėlyvojo renesanso, pokario minimalizmo ir pačios kūrėjos garsinio pasaulio, skleistis savu tempu.

Radio Vilnius continues its ELEVATORS series, dedicated to women redefining contemporary music.

The second edition features Kara-Lis Coverdale – a Canadian composer, pianist, and sound artist whose practice bridges the acoustic and electronic to create works that seem to exist beyond the limits of reality.

Guided by her devotion to sonic afterlife, memory, and material curiosity, Coverdale composes immersive, emotionally charged sound worlds where the boundaries between systems, traditions, and languages dissolve.

Hailed by The Guardian as ‘one of the most exciting composers in North America,’ Coverdale has performed in concert halls, cathedrals, and clubs across the world – from The Barbican and Théâtre du Châtelet to MAC Montréal, Kraftwerk, and Elbphilharmonie – as well as at Unsound, Mutek & countless other festivals.

On November 30, at Sapiegų Palace, Kara-Lis Coverdale will present ‘A Series of Actions in a Sphere of Forever’ — nine nocturnes for piano.

On ‘A Series of Actions in a Sphere of Forever’, Coverdale deepens her investigation of tonal quality by focusing instrumentally on acoustic piano nocturnes. The album’s nine pieces are in a way classic nocturnes (i.e. inspired by night), but also evoke tangential, abstract associations: an animation of melodic webs; moving through a thick substance; sound objects in space.

Unlike Satie, Debussy or Chopin, Coverdale’s nocturnes are for an even later hour, with a heightened sensitivity to noise – or more broadly: anything extraneous to the core harmonic and timbral structure of the piece; and anything that might interfere with clarity, slowness, or perception of space.
